How to Find Coupons

In additon to finding coupons in the Sunday Washington Post, you can find the many of the same coupons as printable internet coupons on smartsource.com and redplum.com. These can often be doubled or tripled just like the regular manufacturer coupons that you find in the Sunday paper. You will need to download a coupon tool in order to print them.

Usually for about $2.00 you can buy a newspaper that will have coupon inserts. Trading coupons is a good way to collect the coupons that you'll actually use. Ask around and see if any family or friends would be willing to give you their coupon inserts after they've picked through what they need. You can go to the recycling center to get old newspapers that might have coupon inserts or you can also contact your newspaper office and see if they would sell you old Sunday papers at a discount.

• Check on Craigslist for postings about community coupon trading groups.

• Make sure your contact information for your store membership cards are accurate so that you can receive coupons by mail and email.

• Email the companies you like and tell them how much you love their products. I recently emailed a company and explained that I was a new customer and looked forward to trying their entire product line. I received about $15 in coupons!

• Go to the websites of companies you like and see if they offer email coupon specials. Often they will email you when they have printable coupons available on their website.

• Don't forget about the blinkies inside grocery stores. Blinkies are the coupon dispensors located by products. Also, look for coupons attached to product packaging. Keep the coupons that print out with receipts.

If this sounds like too much work, go to YouTube to watch videos of people that have saved thousands and gotten lots of free stuff using coupons! This video is kind of an extreme example of stockpiling items from using coupons, but the narration is entertaining.

• Note: Setup a free email account online just for receiving coupons. This way your everyday personal or work email account won't be overwhelmed with spam. Some websites for products will require java to be enabled on your web browser. Websites such as smartsource.com will require you to download a tool for printing coupons. This allows them to keep track of how many coupons you've printed based on your IP address because some people will come along and print zillions of coupons. I'm not a fan of coupon tool downloads from websites such as coupon.com because it causes my anti-malware/virus program to go haywire. Before downloading any such tools, you may want to google the website to see if anyone has had any problems.

How to Save Hours Clipping Coupons

People often ask me what the point is of clipping coupons. They see that it does in fact take time to locate, clip /print, and sort coupons. However, showing a receipt where I have saved between 50% to 75% on items at the grocery store usually shows that it is certainly worth it!

A website called HotCouponWorld has been a life saver with organizing my shopping plan. Other people that use coupons post the sales specials from stores such as Harris Teeter, Kroger, Food Lion, CVS, and RiteAide. They even list the items that are not advertised, saving you a trip to the store. From here, you can get a detailed list of coupon and sale matchups. Most forum posters will even include links to internet printable coupons.

In addition, you will get feedback on if a sale really is a good deal because they will have online discussions in the forums detailing trends with certain products.

How to Organize Your Coupons: The 3-Ring Binder Method

One of the things I've learned with clipping coupons is that it can become frustrating to keep track of them! I hate when I'm at the grocery store and see a great deal but then can't find the coupon I know I clipped. I've made my own system for storing coupons. With a 3-Ring Binder, I've inserted flat pencil holders that have 3-Ring holes in them. (Available at Walmart for $.97).

I have a couple of them to store coupons that are for cleaning and personal supplies. I have one that holds coupons I know I'll use in a shopping trip. I also have several sheets of clear baseball card holders. You can also use photo holders, CD holders, or disk holders. These work great for organizing your coupons by category (frozen foods, canned foods, snacks, etc.) You'll have to fold some of the coupons but most you can fold so that you can see a picture of the product and the expiration date.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the binder is awkward. I constantly have to stop and set the binder across the handle on the cart so I can flip through it. I feel like I'm in everyone's way and constantly have to keep moving my cart to make room for other people. You may consider one of the coupon organizers that hang on the handle of the cart, but consider getting a fabric one so that it doesn't flip around the handle because it's so stiff. The last thing you want is for your coupons to dump all over the floor. I personally want to be able to flip through the pages of my organizer so I'm sticking with my awkward binder.
